Tho criminal sittings of tho Supreme Court concluded to-day, when Tori Biddle, a Maori, was found not guilty on s charge of horse stealing. W-txixaTON, September 12. At tho annual meeting of the Wellington Woollen Co. to-day, the report and balance-sheet was adopted. A proposal to increase tbe remuneration of the directors from £-50 to _!750 met some criticism, and was defeated hy s.v.n votes to six.
Th. weather.during tha last fow days has been very cold aud boisterous, and a hard southerly galo is blowing in Cook Straits, giving shipping a decidedly lively time. : At the Magistrate's Court to-day, F. MoFarland was charged with selling liquor after 11 p.m. The case arose ooi of a banquet given at tho Hotel Cecil, of which the defendant is licensee, to dologates from other cities to the Employers' Association Conference. The case was dismissed, the evidence being inconclusive, but the Magistrate remarked that there appeared to b. a good deal of misapprehension among publicans as to their liability in such cases.

An application tor referenoe in sn industrial disputo was filed to-day b.v the Auckland United Flour Mills' Employees' Industrial Union, citing tbe following firms :—Northern Roller Milling Company, Ltd., Byeroft and Co., Ltd., and Samuel Carey Brown. Tb. ease of Barnett and Grant v. Detsetlve Campbell earns up at the Supreme Court to-day, Plaintiffs had claimed tismagss for wrongful seizure of books and documents, and the Court gave judgment for defendants, but this was reversed by the Appeal Court, and tbe case now came up to assess damages and costs. Mr Justice vVilliams said it had been a very proper ease to go to appeal, as tbe question involyed was almoßt a constitutional on*. Following the example of tbe csbs at Invercarg'tll, he would allow £5 and costs on tho lowest scale. ________________
The money is now available from tbe Borough Council to repay those who originally guaranteed the cost of fireworks for the celobration of peace. Mr Haydon will call ths committee togotnsi to settle ths accounts, and arrange for the return of tho money to the guarantors.
Dr MeGrogor, Inspsetor-Generol ol Hospitals, paid an official visit to the Palmerston Hospital yesterday, when he found everything entirely to his satisfaction. The question of providing farther shelter for the eld men was discussed, and a suggestion by the Inspector regarding an additional terandah will probably bo adopted. Dr McGregor considers that the Hospital '» most oap.bly managed in all its departments, and in every rsspeot a credit to the distriot.
