In tbe former match the chief interest of tbe spectators centered, owina to the fact hat both teams are well up amongst :he front rankers in the contest. The play was very even from start to finish, and was contested in every par of tbo ground. Tho Old Boys commenced Uho match with ten players, although tbey were reinforced later on. ; Both teams were well nmtch-d, but tbe • Midlands proved the viciors.scoring two " aoals to thoir opponents one. Stubbs ' and Taltc shot for the Midland, and D. Fiaser for tbe Old Boys. Mr Wardoa was an efficient and impartial referee. The Rifles-Alhambra match witnessed 'he defeat of tho Alhambras hy two goals to one. The losirg team had again difficulty in getting a full complemant of players and had to play short. The Rides showed very fair form. For the wiiners JkloMurray and Liouisson scored, and F. Woods hit a goal for the Alhambras. . Mr C. Shortt gave satisfaction with the whistle. On Ihe Sports ground was played a well contested and most enjoyable game between the Palmerston and Pioneer elevens. Tho ground was in fair order i and the game in consequence was fast -, ;from start to finish. Although Palmer,)(cn proved victorious they showed very little superior to their and tho game was confined •fo-no special part of the field. Palmerston had good forward combination.but -iound tbo defence of tho Pioneer backs hard to overcome. Tbo Palmerston backs also played a sterling game and repeatedly foiled the attempts to score made by their opponents. The goals scored by the victors were hit respectively by Wylie and Ccoper, the one $hot by the latter being a clmker, The match was contested in the best ot spirit and the vie!o"s wero warmly congratulated. Mr 0. Rush was a capable and impartial referee.
