Obituary.
Mr W. P, Kendall,
It is with sincere regret that we today rcoord the death of Mr W. P. Kendall, which occurred at hisresidence, fitzherbert, yesterday afternoon. The deceased gentleman, who was a wallknown figuro in the dis'rict, was born in 1852, noar Richmond, Yorkshire, where he wa-j educated aud spent his early .lavs. Coming out to the colony in 1874, iv the ship Edwin Fox, Mr Kendull entered the Government, service, where he remained for the next twelve years, during four of which he was foreman on the Rimutaka railway. In 1886 he decided to settle in the Manawatu, and ithen took up Fremington farm, which he has reclaimed from the busb. Since adopting this part of the colony as his home,. Air Kendall has always taken an acti.e part in public affairs, and as a member of tho Fitzherbert Riad Board, Hospital Board, and Kairanga County Council, ho has given a considerable porti .n of his time for the ben,-fit of his fellow ratepayers. From he inception of tha Fit„herbert Road Board and Hospital Board he has been a member of tho-e bodies, and for several years their chairman the duties of which he always discharged with painstaking diligance. When the newly-created Kairanga County Council was formed, Mr Kendall was elected unopposed to represent the Fitzherbert riding, and he has also assisted tho causo of education in his own immediate neighbourhood as a mi-mbor of the Linton School Committee. Aa an ovidence of tho esteem iv which Mr Kendall was hold by his neighbours, it is worthy of nolo that only a few' days ago the settlers of Linton decided lo ask the Government to appoint him to act as a Justice of the Peace for that district.
Socially, tho lato Mr Kendall was widely esteemed a,s a man of sterling cb-.actor, and as a true type of settler opon-heartod and generous. He h„d a very fine tenor voice, and was a conspicuous Uguro at all musioal gatherings, hia l?pod natuts always prompting him to assist in'_«■*» coooert or entertainment where his services woro _f o,ret*,
Mr Kendall loaves a widow and two sous to mourn their loss, and we loel sure the sympathy of tho wholo community will be extsnded'to them in their bereave, ment. '■•'■'
