The heavy ram :incl rough weather last night did not deter another large audience from witnessing the second performance of "The Gondoliers " by thePalmerston Operatic Society. This is perhaps the best compliment that could possibly be given. to the Society, that for two consecutive nights there has been a larger audience than many of the professional companies have drawn. The handsome dresses, graceful dances, striking groupings and tuneful music of oullivan s opera, and the finished manner in which they are presented by the Society, are no doubt the reasons of the great interest taken in the performance. The principals were all in good form last night and they were well supported by those to whom -minor characters had been allotted. Mr P Loniax (The Duke of Plaza-Toro) re «lTi d B,^™H? no<? e for hii* solo 'Duke of Plaza Toro (Limited)," while Miss Burr received a similar honor for her singing of "when I was married." Mr Palmer, as the Grand Inquisitor, had to repeat two of-'his items, "No possible doubt whatever,"1 and "When everyone is somebody." Messrs Jupp, Warden and Rodgers as "Marco " 11 <^«. uui "Luiz" respectively, all acquitted themselves weU. The quartette .^.^Contemplative Fashion," by Mrs laghtwood (Tessa), Miss Hogan (Gianetta), and Messrs Warden and Jupp recwved a vigorous recaU. Mrs Schwarz, as Usilda,' also gave a good interpretation of the part. The choruses by-the trondoheri and Contadine were all given vi a {spirited and hearty, fashion which drew forth the applause of the audience Mr Orchard had the orchestra and performers well under control and the success of the piece was in a great measure duo to his efforts.
