SCHOOL COMMITTEE

The monthly meeting of the Terrace End School Committee was held last evening. Present—Messrs Scott (chairman), Hirsch, Drury, Spicer Canton aud Bennett.

The headmaster reported that a flag, model rifles, and reading charts had been received at the school. A flagpole had been erected and a rifle-rack put up. Mr P. Thomas had taken the place of Miss 0 Donnell, who was on sick leave. The average attendance was 222*72. TfaL6 Secretary reported that Mr Haddon had been appointed caretaker of the sohool.

It was decided to procure gravel and firewood required at the school. The chairman was authorised to interview the Mayor re metalling the street in front of-the school.

o°. Mr Bennett's motion, seconded by Mr Drury, a resolution was passed expressing satisfaction at- the Inspector's roport on his visi tto the school. Correspondence was received as follows :— "•-

From the Education Board, stating that the request that the Committee's capitation be paid direct to the secretary instead of through the bank, was granted. '

From the Education Department, in reply to the Committee's request for copies of the Education Act, stating that the Department regretted it could not deal directly with committeos and asking that the request be made through the Education Board.

From the Education Board, authorising the Committee to accept the tender of R. Smith, £17 8s 6d, for the repairs to the school fences, and that of the Sash and Door Factory of £10 Is 6d for seats in the infant classroom. From the Education Board, stating that Messrs Baker, J. Buick, Wood, Penney, Spurdleand Rev. Ross were candidates for three vacancies on the Education Board. Circulars were received from several of the candidates. A vote of thanks was passed to the Snsh & Door Company, Messrs Bennett & Solhtt, J. Llewellyn and R. Smith for erecting the school flagstaff. The chairman distributed the ballot papers for the election of three members to the Education Board.

The chairman reported that a balance of £3 6s remained from the excursion, prize and flagstaff fund. The headmaster reported having sent out circulars to the parents in reference to the social to be held shortly. Numerous promises of provisions had been received. It was decided to hold the social on July 31st, and a number of details connected with the management were arranged. A number of accounts were passed for payment, and the Committee adjourned.
