EMPIRE AND COLONY.
(By Electric Teleffrauh—Copyneht.) (Per Press Association.) London, June 9. In the House of Commons the Right Hon. J. Chamberlain explained, in connection with the Imperial vetoing of the Sugar "Works Guarantee Bill, that the Government had considered the Queensland measure had many objectionable features, on the grounds both of principle and policy.
The disqualification, Mr Chamberlain said, was based solely on the clause relating to the place of origin o£ the cultivators, which excluded British Indian subjects on account of difference in race and colour, and was, moreover, offensive to the Japanese, who were placed- in the category of Asiatics, regardless of their civilisation.
The codlin moth lays its first eggs od th c fruit.(not in the blossoms) about the middle of November; the scale is hatch ing out at the same time. Apply Straw bridge's Exterminator THEN. Used by all practical fruitgrowers. — H Palmer, Sole Agent, Palmerston North Feilding and district.
