THESDAY, JANUARY 29, 1901. THE QUEEN'S FUNERAL.
GUAR NTEED, LARGEST CIRCULATION N THE DISTRICT.
On Saturday next, the funeral of Her Gracious Majesty Queen Victoria will take place at Home, and the New Zealand authorities ask the people of the colony to fittingly commemorate the termination of the greatest reign in tho history of the world by observing the day as a public holiday. There can be no question about the behest being observed throughout New Zealand, but it has occurred to us that something more might be made of the occasion than that, and with all diffidence we suggest that a united open-air service might beheld during the afternoon, should the weather prove favorable, to enable the] people to assemble together on the great occasion. There^ lias been no notice of any of the public functions held in connection with the great bereavement, and therefore the majority of the people have not been enabled to>, take part in these functions, but there is now plenty of time to carry out the suggestion we have made,;if thoßein ! authority will take the. matter in hand
