ANGLICAN SYNOD

(Per Press Association.)

Napiek, January 29. The fifteenth Anglican General Synod was opened this afternoon, the following being present :—Primate (DrCowie), the Bishops of Melanesia, Wellington, Waiapu, Nelson, Dean Hovell, Archdeacons Sam. Williams, Fancourt, Palmer, "Canons Calder and Fox, Revs. W. Beattie, C. C Harper, McMurray, C. H. Gossett, Dr Williams, Messrs Cotterill, Tanner, Fielder, Quicker, Hamilton, Morrison, Wilson, Collins, Greenwood and McKellar.

The Primate, at the opening of his address to the Synod, made feeling reference to the great loss the Nation had sustained by the death of the Queen. In fullest sense of the word, he said, she possessed the hearts of the people, and the profound respect in Tjhich her name was everywhere held was no more than she deserved. Touching the scripture in schools question, he pointed out that the London Board of schools permitted the Lord's prayer, and the ten Commandments and the Apostle's creed to be taught in school hours, and he could not see why the same teaching should "not be given in New Zealand Government schools. He hoped the unity of the. various sections of the Christian community would secure this important improvement in the Education Act. The Primate deplored the death of the missionaries in China, but expressed himself as opposed to sending single \',omen to labor in heathen lands not subject to British rule, as there was ample scope for work amongst the natives in thts colony. Referring to the South African war, the Primate paid an eloquent tribute to the New Zealanders for their hearty response to theEinpire's call.
