RETURNED TROOPERS.

A tremendous crowd congregated at the Railway Station this morning to welcome some of the returning members of the First Contingent. The number was added to considerably by the numbers of tradespeople and employees present, all business premises having been closed, at 11 o'clock. When the train steamed into the station standingroom was hardly available. The troopers were quickly sighted in one of the front carriages, and despite the heavy rain falling at the moment, a frartic rush was made to the end of the Btation. The troopers had hardly time to get off the train before they were overwhelmed with hearty handshakes and expressions of joy at seeing them safe home again. Despite the hard work and short commons they have been on during their share of the campaign, all the men, except of course those invalided, were looking remarkably well and appeared to have profited considerably by their experiences. Among those returned were Capt. J. Hughes, of Napier; Regimental Sergt.-Major Rogers, of Palmerston North; Sergt.-Major Burr, of Wanganui; Troopers Clevely and Spencer, Palmerston North There were about thirty troopers on tho train, and, except the local members, they proceeded to the east and west coast by their respective trains, hearty cheers being given as the trains left tho station.
