ACCIDENTS & FATALITIES
The Waitotara Correspondent of the Wanganui,Herald writes:—l am glad to hear that the victims of the accident at the site oE the new suspension bridge over the Waitotara are improving. The contractor (Mr Lyons) himself appears to have been very seriously . injured; Three ribs and his collarbone are broken, and there are internal injuries to the head. Tho other sufferer had hissribs broken, and part of the. bone appears to have injured the lung, The accident was caused by the subsidence of one of the anchor holes, while preparations were being made for timbering it.
At Takapau, Hawke's Bay, the infant daughter' of Mr'Jas.,Macfai'lane found, some poisonous substance outside the house and put it in her mouth. Despite prompt precautions taken by the mother the little one died. .;

When the express train from the South came in half-an-bour late last night a rumour spread that a man had been killed by it at Rolleston. Fortunately this turned out to be incorre'st. It pears that when the train pulled up at Rolleston the passengers informed the guard that a man had fallen off the train and a search party went babk to look for him, and the express came on to town. They found a man named Patrick Coffee, a labourer from Timaru, lying alongside the line and groaning. They carried him to Rolleston Junction, and wired to to town for a special train which went out in charge'bf Ashley, goods agoi;t. It brought the man to town, and on being taken.to the hospital was found to be suffering from a bad fracture v of the ' elbow of the right arm.
