ST. ANDREW'S.

There was a large attendance at St. AncL-ew's Church yesterday morning, when the Rev. J. Chisholm conducted a memorial service. The pulpit and choir seats had been draped in mourning. Mr Chisholm took a text from II Chronicles, chapter 35, verse 24, "And all Judah and Jerusalem mourned for Josiah." The preacher referred to the sense of personal bereavement felt all over the Empire on the death of Her Majesty. He then proceeded to point out her Christ-like qualities which had made her so truly great; her sense of the great responsibility and her dependence on Almighty God for strength to carry out her queenly duties, her freedom from a narrow or sectarian spirit, and her thoughtfulness anc consideration for the religious convictions of others, were all spoken of and illustrated by incidents of Her Majesty's life taken from her journal of "Life in the Highlands." An earnest exhortation to his hearers to endeavour to follow in her footsteps concluded the sermon. Mr Chisholm continued his remarks in the evening, when there was another large attendance. The choral portion was very appropriate and impressive. The hymns included the 23rd Psalm, "When our heads are bowed m woe," and " Peace, perfect peace." "While the offertory was being taken, the choir sang, the beautiful anthem, "Blessed are the dead." At the conclusion of the service the organist (Mrs Butler) played the "Dead March" (Saul),the congregation reverently standing.
