SHYLOCK AND HIS VICTIM.

AN ARISTOCRATIC DEFENDANT.

LORD ONSLOW'S SON IN COURT.

The London correspondent of an AusI tralian contemporary sends the follow- | ing item, which will be of interest to New Zealauders :—On Tuesday last the reporters of the law courts repaired to Queen's Bench Division, No. 8, to hear the details of an interesting moneylending case, in which Richard William Allen Onslow, Viscount Cranley, 22,' eldest son of the Earl of Onflow, was to figurei as defendant,' Vt -gentleman nanied Crossloy being the plaintiff. Sir George •Lewis was on Lord Cranley V side, and Mr Rufus Isaace, Q.C., also, and against them was pitted Mr Tindal Atkinson. Alas for the curiosity mongers these legal luminaries talked matters over ere the judge put in an appearance, and when his lordship took his seat »n the bonch the plaintiff's counsel at once rose, and with a sentenco smashed the hopss of those who had foregathered- in the court to hear " revelations "■■ of youthful financial indiscretions and nineteenth century Shylockism. Mr -Atkinson said he and his friends had been able to come to terms which would necessitate an adjournment. His lordship, with a large-sized benignant smile immediately consented to Mr Atkinson's proposition, and tho Viscount, in .company with his legal advisers, immediately left •■ the court,- looking far happier than wheu he entered it. Lord Cranley is the apple of his mother's eye, and has been shepherded with the utmost care from earliest youth. No one abhors a scandal more than Lady Onslow, and it is' not too much to,say f&is money-lender episode will break her. heart. • ' .
