A DRYING MISHAP.

(Per Press Association). Gisbobne, January 19. This evening Mr MacLaurin, a stationholder was driving homewards and on a narrow road along the Waimata river bank he met a sulky containing Misses Laud and Wylie, two hospital nurses, and a child patient they were taking for an outing. The horse attached to the sulky took fright at the sudden meeting and made the other horse do likewise. The horses and vehicles rolled over the steep embankment and the occupants were thrown out. Of thoso in Mr MacLaurin's buggy, Miss McKay, a young lady visitor, who was to return to Auckland on Sunday, had her face badly cut and her right elbow injured, Miss Scott fell into the river and had her head badly cut, Miss Bright, a hospital nurse, was sevorcly shaken, as were the occupants of the other buggy. Miss Wylic, as she rolled over aud over down the embankment, pluckily kept the child, named Garlick, clasped in her arms. The child's leg was badly cut. It ts a nm-acle that none were killed.

Dunedin, January 20. William Graham, eight years old, was killed by a train at Green Island, ou Saturday night. He was playing on a viaduct and before lie could get clear of the line the engine struck him,

Sam Karaitia'na, a member of the well known Masterton family of natives, died at Foxton yesterday from consumption. This is. the third death in the Karaitiana family since May last. An elderly man named John McDonald Russell cut his throat in Wellington yesterday. Little hope is held out of his recovery.
