(Per Press Association.) Auckland, December 21. A representative has been elected to the Anglican General Synod to fill tho vacancy caused by the death, of Archdeacon Clarke. Great interest was taken in tho election an the two candidates, Conon Nelson and the Key W. Beatty, had taken opposite sides as regards St. John's College management. The llev W. Beatty was elected. Cheistchukch, December 21. Eighty of the North Island Maoris who hayo been taking part in the Jubilee celebrations left for their homes by the Hinemoa to-day. A lmudred and ten of the Northern natives will remain till after the New Year. The members of the Melbourne tennis team and the visiting athletes to take ■ part in the Championship Meeting tomorrow were welcomed by the Mayor to-day. Dunedin, December 21. At the Police Court to-day the Stripendiary Magistrate dismissed without prejudice, a charge of biganty, preferred against James Sibbald Mercer. The police explained that there were plenty of witnesses in Tasmania to support the charge, but they would not come over unless their expenses were guaranteed. The Magistrate said the prosecution could lay another information, or move for Mercer's arrest if he attempted to leave the colony. Wellington?, December 22. The Appeal Court delivered several postponed judgments to-day. In Gibson v. Tyree, the question as to sharing the profits of a transaction entered into by Gibson during a partnership, the appeal was allowed with costs on the highest scale. Cross's appeal was dismissed. In the Taupiri Coal Company's case, Mr Bell, for defendants, asked that the question of an injunction should bo referred to the Court below. He had no doubt the company would appeal to the Privy Council as the whole of the works of the company were under the bed of the river. Mr DalzielJ, for plaintiff, said he had no objection to judgment being withheld until February Ist. This was agreed to. Leave was given to appeal tcf the Privy Council. The Appeal Court has adjourntil until February Ist, when further judgment will be delivered. The Hon J. G. Ward, Colonial Secretary, finds he is unable to attend the Sydney clebrations as he had intended. The Governor leaves on Boxing Day in the Hinemoa on atrip to the Southern Mauds, accompanied by Captain Alexander and the Hon. Mr Butler. They will be absent a month. Sir Janies Prendergast will act as Lieut. - Governor during Lord Eanfurly s absence. Dfnedin. December 21. The Glcnroek return for December is 1070z.. 115 tons crushed. Wellington, December 22. In the Appeal Court, judgment was given in the case of Mueller v. Taupiri Coal Mining Company. In this case the Commissioner of Crown Lands, Auckland, sought for an injunction to prevent the Company mining under tho Waikato river The question arose as whether grants for mining were to the edge of the river or its centre.. The Court held that the Crown, in making the grajifc, did not intend to part with the bed ot the: river, and that the injunction should be granted. Costs, on the highest scale were given. The Chief Justice dissented from tho judgment. , Hawera, December 22. Mr O M. Matthews, solicitor, an old resident of Hawera, was found dead m his bed this morning, He retired m his Normanby.
