Presentation of Swords.

There was a largo gathering at Papawai or Saturday when swords wero presented to the officers of the Jubilee contingent. Before handing the swords totheirrecipients, his Excellency said : — It gives me great pleasure to be able to take part in this ceremony. In handing you these swords I may repeat what I have already said, that they are given as emblems of the greatest peace ceremony probably that had ever occurred in any nation —thei Diamond Jubilee of our Sovereign's rejgn. If ever they should be wanted for any other purpose, I have no doubt they will be at her Majesty's disposal. Those who received swords were— Lieutenant-Colonel A. Pitt, of Nelson ; Captain Hoani P. Tunuiarangi, of Gladstone ; Lieutenant David Pringle, of Palmerston North ; and Sergeant-Major Tareha.

The inscriptions on the swords read : — " Presented to by the New Zealand Government, in commemoration of the visit to London with the New Zealand contingent of mounted rifles to to take part in tho celebration of the sixtieth year of her Majesty Queen Victoria, Juno 21st. 1797."
