FIGHTING IN ASHANTI. London, August 24. Two colunis numbering 1800, are punishing the Ashantis who took part in the recent rising which culminated in the siege of Kumassi. The natives are showing stubborn resistance to the punitive forces.
DEATH OF ME FAED.
The death is announced of Mr Thomas Faed, R.A. a celebrated English painter.
COLONIAL BUDGETS. Melbourne, August 23. In an article comparing the Victorian Budget with the Financial Statements delivered in Canada, and Ne^y Zealand, The Age says the comparison should shame Victorians and mako them insist on better administration of public affairs, and a more statesmanlike development of the enormous resources of the colony. In the course of its comments the paper says :—" The lesson to be learned from New Zealand is more striking than, from Canada, because we are closer, and have been accustomed to hear from public teachers that tho Land of - the Moa is a shocking example of vandalism and all the voices of robust Democracy.
THANKS OFFERING.
At a meeting in connection with the Jubilee of Australian Protestant Missions, the Bishop announced that £8400 had been subscribed as a thanks offering from Australian and other missionary dioceses. Archdeacon "White was consecrated Bishop of Carpentaria. i ■ MURDERERS AT LARGE.

The outlawed native murderers Jimmy and Joey Governor have again been heard ef. They arrived a day or two ago at tho house of a settler, which they burned during the owner's absence, and visited another house the only inmate of which was a woman. They said they would not harm her, but took a rifle, ammunition, food and some late newspapers. The desperadoes gave the woman some cartridges, with a request that they should be handed to the police with their compliments.
