The Antarctic.

[By Kleotrio Telegraph—-Cjopyright.J [Per Presa Association.] Sydney, June 22. Details of Borchgrevinck's Southern Cross Antarctic Expedition show that the vessel first struck ice on the 30th December, 1898. Balleny Island was sighted on January 14th, but nearer approach to it was impossible owing to ice. For weeks the Southern Cross remained buried in the snow and ice r and as summer advanced Mr Borchgrevinck feared that he would not be able to get through. The ice pack, however, slackened a little, and after forty-eight days' imprisonment the vessel was taken out into open water, and on February 17th, for tha first time i* the world's history, the anchor was dropped at South Victoria Land, where stores were landed. The vessel her* had a, narrow escape from destruction during a gale. On Maroh Ist the Duke of York's Union Jack was formally hoisted on Victoria Land. The Southern Cross then left for New Zealand, leaving Borchgrevinck and party in at a settlement on Cape Adare.
