ASHHURST.

(From our own correspondent.)

The social held on Friday evening, in aid^of the Church ©f England general fund, was a thorough financial success, which is no doubt very pleasant news-to the parishioners, inasmuch as it has been the means of obtaining the balance required to wipe off all liabilities. The amount owing by the district, at the Eev. Neild's departure, was a good round figure, the paying off of which is to a great extent due to the indefati°--able efforts of the differenc wardens and I vestrymen, who have done wonders in the matter of collecting overdue subscriptions, &c. A feature of the social was the abundance of light refreshments —ever dear to the heart of man—which were supplied by the lady members of the congregation. The following programme was submitted:—Overture, Miss Ansell; song, "Love me for Ever,'" Mr Scott; song, "Dear Heart," Mrs Godtschalk;. song, "The Absent-Mindei Beggar,' Mr Galiichan; song, "Juamta," Mr W. Maunder; soug, «< Shadows on the Ground," Miss I. p ato n; song In Old Madrid," Mr Scott; overture <<-The Mocking Bird," Mrs GodS^ Miss Piercy Messrs Scott, Galiichan Godtschalk (clanonette), J. Maunder (flute) A. Tras 3 (violin); eong| Mrß Godfcschalk; selections on the graphophone. The accompaniments were played by Miss Page. In a number of eases encores were demanded.

We are sorry to hear that Mr Thomas Gardiner, of the Ashhurst-Bunnythorpe road, had the misfortune while at work on Thursday last 10 break a blood vessel On latest enquiry we are pleased to state he is a little better.

Mr T. Nicol, of the Spur Eoad, met with a severe accident last week, when the barrel of his gun exploded, considerably damaging his face.
