A SKILFUL SURGICAL OPERATION.

The American Amb.iss.ulor at Vienna, Mr Katnoss has lately for warded to his Government an interesting .iccou.it of a remarkab'e surgical operation lately performed by Professor Billroth, of Vienna, whie'li wonderful, to tell, consisted m the removal of iv portion of the human stoiuach.'involvingntearly one- third of the organ— and, strange to say, the patient recovered— tiie only successful operation of the kind ever performed. The disease for which this operation was performed was cancer of the stomach, attended with the following symptoms :— riie appetite is quite jwor. There is a peculiar iudescf able distress m the stomuch, a feeling that bos been described as a faint " all gone " sensation; a sticky slime collects about the teeth, especially m the morning, accompanied by an unpleasant taste. Food fails to s itisfy this peculiar faint sensation • but on the contrary, it appears to. aggravate tho feeiiiig. Xiii*eyo.sare, sunkeni tinged'wiJi yellow ; the Lands and feet become cold and sticky— a cold perspiration. The sufferers feel tired nil the time, and sleep does not cee.tu.io give rest. After a time t the pationt DocomDS nervous and irritable, gloomy, ' his mind tilled with evil forebodings. When rising suddenly from a recumbent position there is a dizziness, a whistling, sensation, and he is obliged to grasp somitlting firm to keep from tailing. The bovels costive, the skin dry and hot at times ; the blood becoming thick ,and stagnant, and does not circulate properly.' After a time the patient spits up food sooii a''ter eating, sometimes m a sour and fermented condition,- sometimes sweetish to the taste. Oftentimes there is a palpitation of the heart, and the patient fears he may have heart disease. Towards the last the patient is unable to retiiu auy.ibod whatever, as the openiUg m the intestines b'ecoines* close, or nearly so. Although this disease is i Jdced alarming, sufferers with the above-named symptoms should not ieel nervous, for nine hundred ' and ninety-nine cases out of a thousand have .'so cancer, but simpiy dyspepsia, a disease e.is'ily removed if treated m a proper niauner.
