It seems strange (says the Wanganu: Herald) that an ordinary drunk should have to be brought all the way from Otaki to be placed m the dock and fined ss. Yet such was the case this morning, when a drunk from Otaki was brought up, the constable m charge said that the man had been brought here because there was no J.P. at Otaki. It would surely have been more economical, and answered the the same purpose had the accused been sent to either Foxtou or Palmerston instead of Wanganui. If there are no Justices of the Peace m that district it is time some additions were made to the list of great unpaid, so that petty cases like this can be dealt with on the spot. But why was he taken past Foxton, where there are several J.P.s, with lots o£ idle time on their hand 8, who are only too glad to have the pleasant break m the monotony of their lives of " sitting on" a druuk now and again. Such events are a regular god -send m Foxton, and the great unpaid and the unwashed public assemble on such occasions m great force.
