(united press association.) Wellington, Dec. 3. A young man named Frank Danlop fell 82 feefc from a scaffold, and sustained a fracture of the spine. Very small hopes are entertained of his recovery. Dunedin, Dec. 3. The case^as clear as day on nrisoners' own confession, but it transpired that th« confession was obtained by a promise given by the arresting constable v tnat if they showed where a watch was hidden they should be liberated. Without the information contained m. the confession the charge could not nave been proved, and the judge told toe jury to dismiss the confession from their minds. In the Supreme Court to-day Job* Sylvester, charged with firing at Mr Chalmers, Railway Inspector, with intent to murder, was found guilty and sentenced to 10 gears' penal servitude. Christohurch, Dec. 8. A boy, «pn of Mr Neve, had a wonderful escape from a fatal accident today. He was driving across the railway line at Montreal-st, when a shuntmg engine struck the care, smashed it, B ?, n T!f iDJ " ured fche horse » a °d literally ballooned the boy, who fell down on the engine, and was earned along for some chains before it was stopped.
