Atrocious Outrage.
An Adelaide telegram of Monday, 10th November, says : — " Miss Hose, the daughter of Mr Robert A. Hose, who was on a visit to her brother-in-law, Mr A, F. Lines, farmer, left his house at about 8 o'clock on Saturday night to gp to a store a little distance off. She had got about 200 yards, when a young man met her, and asked her the time. She took oat her watch, told him,- and was walking homewards, when the man went after her with rapid steps. Hearing him close by, she turned her head slightly, when the man struck her a terrible blow on the head with a brass handled riding- whip. The girl fell senseless, but on coming round apparently two or three minutes afterwards, she found the man hold* ing her by the throat and attempting to. commit a rape. The blood was over her neck, and she could feel it running from her head copiously. She screamed out, but the man drew a revolver, and threatened to shoot her if she spoke or screamed. This terrified the poor girl, who could hardly articulate, and the man succeeded m committing a capital offence. The girl screamed, and Mr Lines rushed out. Before he could rsach them the man rose, and drawing a revolver again, he fired four shots at Mr Lines, AH missed except one, whioh entered his coat on the left side, and striking something m his pocket, was stopped m its progress, The bullet was. afterwards
found m his pocket. The man decamped while Mr Lines was attending to the girl. Miss Rose now lies m v very precarious condition. Whether the brain is injured caunot yet be ascertained. The assault will, it is feared, result m a long illness, if nothing more dangerous sets m. A. black tracker was at work all day yesterday endeavouring to fiud the criminal. He was a young man about 25 years of age. Miss Rose, who is 19 years of age, is engaged to be married to a young man m Melbourne. She is an accomplished young lady, and well known and esteemed."
