NOTES ON CURRENT EVENTS.
The Pdst is sorry to learn, on good athority, that the two large locomotives . recently imported from England by the Wellington Manawatu Railway have riiiot answered expectations.. They were, construoted by special designs prepared by the company's engineer. Mr^Higgiu-, son, but when they were put together it ■was found that they were unable tO;per:form anything like the amount of work expected from them. Believing that this might result from some error. -iv fit-, ting, the company sent the locomotives to .the; Government workshops at Petone, where they were thoroughly overhauled by Mr. Ashcroft, but found to be (quite perfect, so. far as constructiou 1 and fitting went. The fault wi(hv them i is, we are informed, that the cylinders : are too small, and that the weight- of ■ the various poriidns is improperly distri- .; buted, so that m rounding the curves ; and 'going np steep grades the wheels do not bite. The engines, therefore, I can only haul four trucks where it. was thought they would be able to haul ted; :It is hoped that the defects are not ir- ■ remediable. 1. .
