Buckland's sale of allotments and sections m North Gishorne township, the property of the New Zealand Land Settlement Company, there was a strong representation of East Coast settlers. The sales effected totaled £6000. .. ; Ai a meeting of the Rotorua leaseholders, held to protest against the oppressive legislation uffecting the township of Rotorua, m the Hot liiike d'.itrict, it was resolved that a petition l>e framed and forwarded to the General- Assembly, signed by the chairman and secretary on behalf of the leaseholders. <•■■ Nelson, Sept. 25. H. S. Cresswell, whose death from carbine shot was reported the. other day, was buried to-day with military honors. The funeral procession wa* a very large one, notwithstanding pouring rain. An art exhibition of paintings, sketches, and studies of John Gully was opened this evening by the Mayor. The collection is an admirable one, and the exhibition has been got up principally by the. Bishop of Nelson and a committee with . the view of starting an art gallery. Dunedin, Sept. 25. The Bine Ribbon executive have sent the following telegrams to the city members : — X The Blue Ribbon Societies Union urge strenuous opposition to the compensation arid optional endorsement clauses m Mr Steward's Bill. Compensation means a large and indefinite liability m restraint of popular control 1 ." The committee ofithe of Commerce have carried the following resolution :— " That the 1 committee view with concern Ihe ■ proposal of of Sir Julius Yogel to "increase the rate of postage on letters via Brindisi to Is per half ounce, as m their opinion such a step will practically close this route to the general community, and so deprive them of mail communication with 'Home which they now enjoy. Owing to a very inefficient lighter* a?e m the service carried on by M> Kinross and the excessive clmrpes imposed, a number of leading commercial firms are {subscribing the necessa«y capital to purchase n new* steamer and lighters. Most of the chief importera have promised their support to the n^w venture. Cheistchirch, Sept. 25. For the annual horse parade on Saturday there are forty entries, ten less thnu last year. Hatching out trout ova, m the Acclimatisation Socioty's ponds hns been, very successful this season, no less than 50,000 young fish having been, obtained. . Timahu, Sept. 25. Very h>avy rain lias been lulling here lor the last two days, and stfll continues. No floods arc as' yfet reported. Geraldine races had, m copsequence, to be postponed from to-day till Thui-sday and Friday next.
