The piano used by Mr Langkjer at last night's concert was the one belonging to the Foresters I .} Hall, than which we venture to say there is not a worse m this district. The conductor, however, brought out what little music there was left m the instrument. It is expected the receipts of the Gaustad concert will be over £30. The poem recited by Miss Ron berg at | last night's entertainment was composed by Mr Langkjer. Pastor Gaustad during his lecture last evening stated he hoped Messrs Palmorson and Scott's scheme to induce Indian capitalists to settle m this country would prove successful,aßft'omhisexporicnce of both climates he could say New Zealand was by far superior and healthier m this respect. Colonel Leckie died m Wellington last night. His death was accelerated by the shock of a fire alarm on his premises some time ago. He was 60 years of age. He served m the 39th through the Crimean war and was present at the storming of Sebnstapol. He also served m Canada and India, and was an intimate friend of " Chinese Gordon." He leaves a wife and grown-up family. The Palmerston portion of the 'Frisco mail may be expected by mid-day train to-morrow, via New Plymouth and Wanganui. The New Zealand Shipping Company have received advices that their steamer Aorangi from London to Wellington, has arrived at the Cape. The Peter Stuart from London to Wellington, has on board a torpedo boat for Auckland and another for Wellington. Five Auckland hoodlums concerned m a riot on Saturday night were brought up at the Police Court and sentenced to terms of imprisonment varying from two to four months. The accommodation house and store at Maraekakaho, Hawke's Bay, was burnt to the ground last night. It is supposed some curtains left m front of the fire caused the occurrence. Nothing was saved. No loss of life is recorded. An apology was made last evening's concert on behalf of Mrs West. This lady's absence, we understand, was the reason of the second part m the programme not being strictly adhered to. From the latest market reports we extract the following : — Wool. — The market continues firm. At to-day's auction, 10,800 bales were catalogued. The total { quantity of wheat afloat for the United Kingdom is 1,800,000 quarters. New Zealand mutton, prime quality, is unchanged at 5d per lb. Poor Mr Lockie breathed his last at 8 o'clock this morning. Mr T. King and others ministered to his dying wants. Dr Macintyre was most assiduous m his attention, and could not have been more kindly and considerate. Mr Lockie wi'l be missed by a good many m Palmerston. Kelly's Ohinemutu store was burned down on Sunday night. A milk-condensing industry is about being established at a Swiss settlement near Auckland. The Sydney small-pox patients are progressing f avouarbly, but a fresh case . is reported. An Auckland detective who assisted at a post mortem is now suffering from blood poisoning. The Jane Douglas arrived at noon today and leaves to-night at ten. The Hon. W. Wood, M.L.C. of Invercargill, is suffering from paralysis, and but slight hopes are entertained of bis recovery. By latest news we learn that Major Atkinson hopes to succeed m forming a Ministry. The House stands adjourned till 7.30 to-morrow night to enable him to do so.
