Robert Recce, of the Salvation Army, robbed a fellow-lodger m a boardinghouse (Edward Lyons) of a deposit receipt for £180 and a quality of jewellery. Petty larcenies,' showing an organised gang, are greatly on the increase. Judge Fenton has published a lengthy paper giving a historical, narrative of the course of legislation m relation to native lands, and propounding a plan of his own for remedyiug the abuses of the present system of purchasing native lands.
Cheistchurch, July 9. 'His Excellency the' Governor has taken the lease for fifteen months of Elmswood, the residence of the late Mr R. H. Rhodes. Thirty " unemployed " were disoharged from the Addington Worshops to-day because they refused to proceed toi Ashby Bank to work at 4s 6cl a day. Arrangements had been made for rationing them at 8d a day, and. for providing sleeping accommodation.
Dunediv, July 9. Mr Fulton. M.H.R., has forwarded to the Otago University £105 (one half the honorarium), to form tho nucleus of a scholarship.
Invkrcargill, July 9. A case of some importance was decided m the Resident Magistrates Court. The Licensed Traues Protection Association charged. John Kingslaud with 4 illegally sitting on the licensing bench'of the city wards while he was interested as mortgagee of a country hotel. Counsel for the defence contended, among other thiugs, that the kctonly provided for the prevention of interested parties taking a seat on the bench of district m which they were interested m public house property. For the complainant it was urged that m the case of the city wards such interpretation would permit a man to be elected who owned a hotel on the other side of the street. Finally the charge was dismissed on the technical ground that complainant had failed to prove that the house m which defendant was said to be interested was licensed.
Ros«, July 9. There was some excitement here last night about the reefs at Cedar Creek, m consequence of which 24th shares m the prospectors' and adjoining leases rose from £100 to £500.
Blenheim, July 9. The newly-erected church at Wairau Pah was opened yesterday m the presence of a great crowd of Europeans of all denominations. Episcopalian, Wesleyan, aud Presbyterian ministers wero present, with Major Pollard and Bandmaster Tucker of the Salvation Army. A public meeting m the church was pre- ' sided over by Archdeacon -Butt, who has completed forty years' service m Nelson and Marlborough. The new church cost £350, and is all paid for by Wairau Maoris out; of . moneys belonging to the tribe of wkich Rore, a son of one of! the principal leaders m the Wairau massacre, is chief. .
