Manawatu Standard (PUBLISHED DAILY) The Oldest Daily Newspaper on the West Coast. THURSDAY, JUNE 12, 1884. A USEFUL MEMBER.
Last Monday night (says the Woodville Mx<ti)tiner ) a deputation from the Settlers' Association interviewed Mr W. C. Smith, M.H.R. for the purpose of explaining several local requirements, to which his attention was desired. The first matter was the land settlement question, which was explained and discussed, and a copy of the resolutions embodied m the recommendations of the Settlers'* Association being handed to Mr Smith, who|promised to do what he could to ftaye the clauses given effect to m the Land Act. The slow progress of the Manawatu bridge, the erection of the bridge at the lower Ferry, the
provisions of increased facilities for inspecting sheep travelling through the Gorge, the procuring of a central station site, improvement of the Telegraph Office, the erection of a Court-house, and the early letting of the formation of railway line to Woodville, were subjects which were introduced, and to which the member promised to devote his attention. - A vote of thanks was tendered to Mr Smith, Mr Caklii.k expressing the. opinion that it would be difficult to get a member to represent the district better than Mr Smith was doing. We have on previous occasions expressed our high opinion of Mr Smith as a true representative of his district — one who takes pains to ascertain its wants and requirements, and who exerts himself m the House to have their wishes given effect to. We only wish Manawatu had a member like him. Our only consolation lies m the fact that with the return of Mr D. H. Macarthue, who is almost certain to be elected unopposed, the interests of our district will be as faithfully looked after as those of Waipawa are by Mr Smith, which we think is saying a good deal. Were Waipawa, for the mere sake of giving a new man a trial, to reject Mr Smith, the constituency would only regret its foily once, and that would be during all the ensuing Parliamentary term.
