Manawatu Standard (PUBLISHED DAILY.) The Oldest Daily Newspaper on the West Coast. WEDNESDAY, JUNE 11, 1884. THE BOROUGH ELECTIONS.

Wu again impress upon the ratepayers the necessity of making a wise choice of representatives for the Borough elections about to take place. The vacancies are caused by the recent division of the Borough into four wards, for each of which three Councillors will be required. All nominations of candidates mus be m the Borough Council Office by noon of next Saturday, so that it behoves the ratepayers to cast about and see that good men are returned. We learn with regret that several of the present Council will not come forward for re-election. Crs. Leauy, Ferguson, Walker, and McNeil, have decided not to stand. It is doubtful if Cr Lintou will be a candidate, and it is almost certain thatCr Perkins, owing to his early departure for Tasmania, will not come forward. We can but regret excedingly that the old and tried men are dropping out. The experience of the last few-months has not been without its due effect. People will not come forward to take public office to be abused, ignored, and insulted. The result must be that the interests of the ratepayers will inevitably suffer. We very much doubt if the requisite number of nominations will be forthcoming. Peopje generally now admit how ill-advised was t\\e action of the few who worked the oracle m the matter of the wards division. We trust the ratepayers will endeavour to return the best men who can be induced to come forward Several of our leading citizens have b,een earnestly entreated to become candidates, but have firmly declined to do so. Possibly at the general election m September, a change m public feeling may have taken place, and the disunion that has been

brought about by the action of certain interested persons may be succeeded by that unanimity of sentiment and action formerly so eminently characteristic of the administration of Borough affairs m Palmerston. We can only express our sincere hope and wish m that respect — So mote it be.
