Manawatu Standard ( PUBLISHED DAILY.) The Oldest Daily Newspaper on the West Coast. TUESDAY, JUNE 10, 1884. MEMBERS AND THEIR CONSTITUENTS.
The electors of ;i certain district iv South Australia, recently adopted a course which might be copied with advantage I >y other constituencies. In view of tin approaching election, they met together to compare notes, and prepai c a sort of programme of what they expected then- representative to be and to do. They did not waste their time by proposing 1 and carrying out all manner of fancy and impracticable resolution*, nor did they • hn-ise an elaborate scheme under the pressure of which any man representing them would be so fe'tered as to lose his individuality. They confined themselves to four resolutions all of general interest, and not one of which had any particular local bearing. This is an infinitely better method than that usually adopted of leaving the meeting open for any individual present Lo ask the candidate what questions may occur to him on the ■spur of the moment, In. reading the reports of meetings of member* with their constituents m this colony and of candidates for election we 1 avo often been struck with the absurdity of a vast number of the questions asked. Evidently m the

Such meetings should be the oceas.ons of the interchange of views and iv forniati 'ii bet.wemi members or Candida! es and the. electors, and not to be made scenes of unseemly viot and confusion as they too often are by many unto whom manhood suffrage has given a privilege they are not qualified to u.se m a proper manner.
