LOCAL AND GENERAL.
A Young Men's Improvemant Class is being organized m connection with the English Church. We notice Mr Piirkes has succeeded m capturing a number of those very objectionable birds of prey of the hawk species, called Eagle Ha\vks,considerable damage has lately been caused by those birds attacking the lambs of settlers and destroying them, m some cases they will get hold of the lambs when very young and actually carry them off. We counted some 13 birds tacked on to a fence, somo of them measuring 4 feet from wing io wing. The Acclimatization Society will, we have no doubt, be pleasedto know of the successful destruction of these voracious birds, birds, so dangerous to both stock and game. It may be of interest to nis numerous friends to hear that Captain R. Todd, of the ship Northumberland, at present at Napier, is now m Wellington on a visit. It will be remembered that he was m the command of the St. Leoner Is, which vessel sank m the English Channel m consequence of a collision, last year. This is his first visit to Wellington since that event. The unhappy man Hawley, who some few days ago atterai tid to commit suicide by stabbing himself, at the Woodside railway station, has been remanded on a charge of attempting his life, to the 20th inst., by the local justice. Meanwhile, Hawley has been brought down to .Wellington, and has been relegated to the Mount View Lunatic Asylum, as it was found that the accomodation at the Greytown Hospital was insufficient for a person m his demented condition. The Post received the following letter from Mr James Marshall. Johnsonviile ; — " In your issue of the Bth inst. you have a paragraph wherein the Johnsonville Town Board ask me to remove my pig-sty, and I have siiice had notice from the Chairman to the same effect. I would most willingly do so, but as the said pigsty is a hole m the side of the road, made by the New Zealand Company, I cannot see how it can be done, but I am open to give the Board a good day's wage an 1 a big drink if they will remove it, or get someone else to do it for me." According to the Pest informations for assault have been laid a/aiust three persons residing m Thorndon end of the city. The offence is alleged to have been committed m consequence of the circulation of a report of a horrifying character concerning the morality of One of the parties coucerned.
