At a meeting of the committee of the recently-formed Constitutional Reformi Association, Captain Baldwin was elec- | ted chairman. It was resolved to hold, a public meeting shortly. Christchukcii, April 25. j Fears are entertained as to the lifo of Mr H. J. Tancred, Chancellor of the University, who is seriously ill. Mr T. S, "Weston and F. Guiuness are spoken of as candidates tor Christchurch N ovtl«, and Messrs Weston and Dunlop for the Avon. Yesterday evening a child named Ann Jane Carr, 3 years old, was found liy its mother lying insensible on the road near its home m Colombo-street North. It died m about two hours. The medical examination of the hody showed that the brain had been injured apparently by a wheel passing over the child. An inquest will I»c held to-day but no evidence was elicited as to laow the injury had been inflicted, and the inquiry whs adjourned for a week. The balance sheet showed a loss of £778. Wangaxui, April 25. j The adjourned public meeting of householders was held to-night to consider the action of the Education Board m abolishing the district high schools m Wanganui. The attendance was not very large, biita number of lengthy I speeches were delivered ; and a motion wav passed condemning the action ot" the board, and requesting them to reconsider their decision. Auckland, April 25. At a meeting of the City East Licensing Committee held to-day, it declined to grant a transfer of a license m the case of what is known as "Wandering Waverley Hotel, which has been. mad<» the subject ot so much litigation. The Chairman said the previous committee had made an error, and the present committee declined to perpetuate it. Aba meeting to-day of the Northern Steamship Company, the report presented was satisfactory. A dividend for the half-year at the rate of 10 per, cent, was declared. The company are building a new steamer to replace the Grleuelg m the Tauranga, Russell, and Auckland fcraJe, which will be launched li-orn the Clyde this month. An order has also boen sent for a light draft twin scre»v steamer for stock carrying, and she is intended for the Waitara. and West Coast. She is to be thoroughly well ventilated, and will be fitted with a chamber for freezing meat. Both steamers are expected here m J September next.
