TRADE WITH JAPAN.
<• "(Weilirifetdji Papery i The avrival for the first time m the history of the"coloiiy of a trading vessel, direct from' Japan is one or those gratifyioef events whioh sprres to mark: the expansion ofc^oui commerce. The French vessel Louise, which came into this p6rt-. last night, ladeii.with ripe, will, we trust, be followed by niany others, -which will not merely bring us goods which we require, but also
take back our produce to new markets. Our wool and frozen meat may really stand a better chance than before of new customers at a future time from this small beginning of trade. The Japanese have been styled the English or Yankees ot Asia, from their enterprise and pluck; and we trust that their first speculative shipment to Wellington may prove sufficiently remunerative to induce them to embark further m the same business. The population of Japan; ihough not precisely "known is very. large, the city • of Jeddo alone being estimated a' generation bick as being over a:millioir-and a - half ot inhabitants, so that business relations "with them are worth cultivating.
