SUICIDE IN WELLINGTON.
Further Particulars.
A sad case of suicide occurred in Wellington on New Year's Eve.- An old man named Thomas Q. Pickers, after being seventeen years in the service of the Town Board and the City Corporation, applied, three months ago to the City Council for a' pension as an old servant. He stated that' while in the Corporation service as a laborei 1 , his groin was injured seven years ago, causing a tumor ; and being unfit for hard work he was afterwards appointed messenger at the Corporation offices. Latterly his health had been failing (his age being 64 and his wife's age 70), and he asked for some allowance in Ins old age. The City Council discussed his application, and agreed to allow him three mouths' pay, giving him notice to discontinue his service at the end of that time. , His pay would therefore cease about the tirst fortnight in the new year. This approaching event is stated to have made the old man despondent, though he was generally cheerful, very steady, and sensible. His wife left home for a few days on a visit, aud perhaps the old man felt his loneliness and depression more during her absence. He to ha\egone into the boatshed of his son-in-law, where he was found suspended.
