Manawatu Standard (PUBLISHED DAILY.) Suivant la verite. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 21, 1883. OUR COLONIAL PROSPECTS.
In connection with recent articles on this subject which have appeared m the Standard, we note that the London correspondent of an ; exchange writes : — "What with new steamer, new companies, and a host of emigrants on the way to New Zealand, surely your colony has returning prosperity before i{." This is very satisfactory news indeed ; and we contend 'that ''all the indications point' to a return of prosperity, and on
a more assured ba?is than the lavish expenditure of Colonial Loans, which at best was but ephemeral and ttmubstan* tial, and left the dregs of hitter disap* pointdient behind,/ahd involved thousands m compion ruin. What we wish to see is the' extensive" development of our immense resources, the shipment to tho London markets of our wool, our frozen meat, and onr other. products ; the opening up of oiir country by roads and where necessary railways, and the establishment of local industries all over the land. By these means we will get genuine lasting prosperity, increasing from day to day and from year to yoar, and benefiting all classes ot onr popula- / tion. Good government can assist m such a grand work, bat the peodle themselves must be the moving power and active machinery to bring about the results sought to be achieved.
