PECULIAR SUNSETS.
Some few weeks ago, geneial attention was attract cd to the brilliancy of the eastern heavens after sunset, and there was much speculation as to the cause of it. The matter attracted the attention of Mr Ellery, and he then refers to it on October 1 5 : — " With regiird to the peculiar sunsets, I can only say that these, and similar phenomena, are always duo to an altered condition m tlie humidity of the upper stratum of atmosphere. The condition of the upper stratum of the atmosphere at present is an indication of the coming storm, gales at sea, anil uu.-ettled weather generally. This is the usual result. I may ptst add that for more than a week past the sun's surface has been very much disturbed, and unusually large *pote have appeared on its face. This adds, to a certain degree, to the probability of stormy and unsettled weather m tho very near future. The weather experienced both m Aii3stnilia and New Zealand literally, during the past two or threw weeks, has amply verified Mr Ellery's prediction.
