Manawatu Standard. (PUBLI SHED DAILY.) Suivant la verite. WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 1883. REVENUE DECLINE.
- : — C?r;z:<\Oi 0-, : ..... AJe the meeting of tlitf Dtinedin Cham, her of Commerce, Mr George Bell, the Cli^utnan, m the course of ? his address, referring to the influence of colonial manufactures upon the revenue 5 said :-rry' ; Some v attention has been; directed by some section of the Press to the decline of the revenue, and various reasons .. are assigned. .It is. very plain, however, that as some productions supersede imported mariufac-' tui'es, the Customs revenue must suffer. •Take for instance the lesuTt'of* our woollen manufactures. They had used iwpol to the value of £74,300 during.; the year, displacing imported articles « to the value of certainly, not less than £200,000 ; these have displaced tho importations,»f apparel, hosiery; and .idjimlar articles ; to the value of say Thus the revenue suffers, to the extent of 16 per cent, on that amount ; but the country is the gainer by employing labor, and saving the profit that would otherwise have goneT into the pockets of Hortte 'manufac-' tureis. Candles, soap, saddlery, be^ and many other articles have similar operation on the revenue, I think
these point to the ultimate necessity of superseding indirect by direct taxation.
