A correspondent writing to the Nelson Colonist says ':— " In s Greyihouth and Hokitika there is a free>atid : ejtsy social tone, and not without its touohea of rough playfulness and humor, as 1 is illustrated, by ; the following incident which occurred some years hack. \ A certain magistrate had been on the spree with some jolly miners, ; one of whomi however, became -slightly furiQus,andhad to be put .under lock and key until the next day, when he was. brought up before -the magistrate who had spouted for him ithe previous night. The accused disclaimed having, beea' drunk and disorderly,. : . 'Have you ;any witness?' asked his Worship." yjFes, I have you.
