COLLIERY EXPLOSION.
The Rhondda Valley district was again the scene of a sad fatal colliery accident on August 21, when an explosion occurred at the Gelli pit, Tstrad, owned by Messrs Thomas and Griffiths. The accident happened when the day shitt, numbering about four hundrad men, was at work, but the effects of the disaster were localised. Great consternation was causfd m the pit, and it was eventually ascertained that twenty-one were at wof k with the steam coal m the heading when the gas was fired, and that all the men were serioasly iojured. One man afterwards succumbed . to his injuries. How the explosion oqcurrcd is not clearly known, although it is attributed by some to the workmen suddenly coming upon a blower m tha workings where gas was evolved. The news was soon noised about the valley, and the nsual heart-rendin? s?ene3 took place m the crowd as the men were brought up and identified by those who had Been them go down m safety only a shore time before. There was a great amount of energy shown m rescuing the men who were affected by the shock, and little time was lost m attending to their needs.
