A DISGRACEFUL AFFAIR.
. (To the Editor Hawke's Bay Herald.) Sir,— Savages have respect for their dead, but that does not seem to be the case with civilised people. I happened to be walking m thi cemetery to-day, wheh;a poor woncun frantic with g. ief, asked me wh*t she should do? She had ome to pay her Sunday visit to the grave of her little girl, who had been buried about a year. Since the burial the authorities had enquired if the parents intende/to buy the grave j and the answer was m thelamrmativef but being poor people they have hitherto been unable to do so.' This mornin» the poor mother was horrificd ~tb~~_u_l the grave, oi her child opened ;r and empty, while the coffin had been taLn out and lay on the. grass oat^ot the way. Is there .a,, single excuse or reason that can justify such a proceeding m the free and humane colony of New Zealand ?— _ am, && September 23, 1883. • '"^ ' *
