Melbourne, Sentemher 19. Rabbits have increased to an alarm. ing extent during the last few weeks on the Wimmera, where these animals are said to be breeding ; to an. extent before unknown. A report has been j received to the effect that there is now ! no grass on the Cow Plains Station, m | the Wimmera district, which formerly was one of the finest grazing properties m the Wimmera, but now, owing to tbe ravages of the rabbit, is said to be incapable of carrying any stock. At Lilydale, near Melbourne, 62 bushels of wheat per acre were obtained last year from land treated with lime. Captain Alan Thomas, the new naval commander for Victoria, is 39 years old. He joined the Imperial service m 1856, and has seen active service ih Egypt. He will serve the colony for four years. # Mr R. McGregor, one of the members for Emerald Hill m the Legislative Assembly, diedjthis morning. He was siezed with serious illness whilst at a football match some time ago, and never recovered consciousness. The jury, having; returned a verdict m accordance with the medical testimony, added a rider expressing their opinion that the rules of the football clubs should be so modified as to lessen the danger of accidents arising from rough play occurring m future.
