The Hawera Mystery
[Bawera Star.] To sum up then, although many per* Bons think that the police were iodiscreet m charging Josephine Green with the gravest offence known to the law, upon such slender evidence as they had at the time, still it is beyond question that the case wore a very serious aspect, and that it would even now be a great relief to the public mind if George Williams would appear with the child alive and well m his possession. Mr Cowper who, as Miss' Green's fiance, had a lively interest m tha case, confidently asserted that the man and the child could be found ; but as it is evident that their production would have at once disposed of the charge and hay« saved much mental distress to the act cused and to her friends, we can only suppose that the defence, as well as the prosecution, were unable to find anything of them. Now that thecise has ended, it is fuller of mystery than when it began.
