•A very extraordinary match Game off at Southbridge, Canterbury, on Saturday last.. The following .condensed .account is , taken from the. Lytteltqia Times : —The horse Slim Jim* was to ] follow that old veteran Mousetrap across such country as the rider of the latter horse might choose, for the space of one hour, at the conclusion of which Slim Jim was to be on the same side of the fence and within a hundred yards of Mousetrap. As might well be anticipated the novelty of the wager attracted a large number of people. In ord»r that his horse should have every possible chance, the backer of Mousetrap had retained the servises of T. Sheenan, whilst Slim Jim was ridden by Mr George Aynsley. Mousetrap: cleared a five barred gate to start with, and was followed by his opponent. The former then went over : (through?) a nine foot gorse hedge;, which 81im Jim did not fancy much, but however ,' eventually gofc'to follow, only to baulk at another " stiff *un," which he'crawled through. While negotiating al2 toot gorse hedge, : Mousetrap 'fell .. into a, ditch, both horse and rider escaping injury. He at last got Out of sight of ' his rival, 'and hid behind a hedge, thus winning the wager."
