SECULAR EDUCATION.

o Tn" the cour.sopf his pastoral on secular education, on last Sunday evening, at the Roman Catholic Cathedral, Wellington, Bishop Redwood denounced, lin strong terms, the present secular syetem thrust upon the Roman Catholics " against their will and against all justice" as dangerous and hurtful. He declared that it favoured, to an enormous degree, the spread of unbelief and indifferentism, and that- it was an attempt aagainst(t t( the faith, piety, and religious rights of the Catholic and Christian people, of New Zealand." ng, with admirable eloquincj. how the secular system had struck both the Catholic end Anglican Churches m a vital part, by depriving the one of her authority m the schools and the other of her Bible, had said—" By withdrawing all the higher motives from the minds of our children, you are most- surely, however unintentionally preparing for us a future of vice, confusion, and disaster." I Bishop Redwood also quotei a remark ■of the great Protestant statesman, Guizot, to the effect that " education must be moral and religious if it is desired to make it useful to the people and to society." He contended, therefore, that the Catholics were strictly bound to provide for their children a thorough Catholic education. With the main tenor of the Bishop's remarks we are iv accord. We believe and feel that secular State education is not tending to ad» vance this Colony iv the path of national morality, loyalty, and integrity.
