A Laudable Example.

•*— [Wellington Paper,] With a view of fostering local indus* tries iv the colony, the Manawatu County Council has set an example that might well be followed by the General Government. 'We refer to a contract recently let to Messrs Smith Bros., of Mannerß-street,Jpr. supplying ,100,0.00 iron spikes, to "be used m constructing the tramway between Foxton and Sandon. This large order will require 17 tons of iron worked up into spikes. The contract is to be completed within four months, and the first consignment of some 7000 spikes was forwarded to Foxton on Saturday last. The price tendered by Messrs Smith Bros, was, we understand, slightly higher than the English estimate, but the Council took the commendable course of giving preference to a colonial foundry, even though somewhat more has to be paid. The benefit will doubtless be fek m many ways.
