In a few hours a pitcher of water will absorb all the respired gases m the room, the air of which will have become , much purer, but the water utterly filthy. The colder the water is the greater capacity to contain these gases. At ordinary temperature a pail of water will : absorb a pint of carbonic acid sasard yevral pints of ammonia. The Capacity is nearly doubled by reducing the water to the teinpatnre of ice. Hence water kept m a room awhile is unfit for 'use. Impure water is more injurious than impure air. ■" •■. f
