A fearful calamity, nvolving ar immense loss of life, occurred at Baltimore a city of the United ' States, sitnated on the river Patapsco. A number of Roman Catholic pleasuf eiseekers were picniciug oh the banks of the river, when a largb number of them congregated on a small jetty which projects into the stream . Without the slightest warning the structure gave way, and the crowd was precipitated into the river, A scene of terrible confusion ensued. Some few i were able to reach the shore, but a great majority were swept away by the current. It is estimated that 100 persons, chiefly women and children, were drowned.
