Local Industry.
— — ♦ . ■ ■ ' [Mataura En&ign.] The Mataura paper mills are now turning out between five and six tons of brown pa<-cr )>ev Wtiek, — a quantity considerably m excess of past averages. The quality, like the quantity,, is i'nprovinp ; and s> satisfactorily are the mills working. tb»t the making of paper suitable for bags is to be cororcencfd m earnest next nw tb. For paper of this class there should b* a good demand m thacoiony. It is not surprising to fiud that '.he supply oi native grass for j api-r---making it showing signs of partially giving out. Almost every week the. supply has to be brought h longer distancp/and. the directory, under tho-e circumstances, arsv displaying /nix inclination to use straw, waste paper, bsggii'g, &c ; these, of course, beiujust as "suitable as tussock. .Altogether, the mill seems to bewoifcing veryjeatistactorily just now,' and we hope the j.loud's silver lining will develop^ more anci more. We cannot afford m this distiict to look "with an uninterested eyeon an institution affording employment to filteen or twenty hands , and it is our earnest hope that before mmy years ere bverj other native industries will take root and flourish on the banks of the Mataura. ■
