The British King's Meat CARGO.

[Post.] * It ii nothing less than a public misfortune that the first cargo of frozen meat sent home by the new line of direct steam-Mrs thould have turned ont so badly as that of the British King ap • pears to have done. And it is all the more mortifying to'learn ti^t the failure was due entirely to carelessness and bad management at this end. That the fault did not lie with the ship is demonstrated by the faot that one of her shipments arrived m perfect order and realised excellent prices. But of the bulk we are told, some was green and tainted at the bone through delay m freezing, Borne was mildewed' and some wat* overgrown with fungus through negligence m the killing. The evil is openly attributed to '• downright eireJflflsnesfr at Christohurch," and we are plainly warned that a few more such iuch faulty shipments; will rain the high character hitherto borne by New Zea« land meat, and lower ifcß value to that of Australian shipments which have long acquired a bad name, and fetch legs prices owing to original.carelessness ot a character similar to' that of which BQme New Zealand shippers now stand convicted. Our Wellington meat exporters should take timely warning by this unlucky afair^and exerqisf tbe most stringent' supervision' ove£ ' s every detail of both preparation and shipment, and the utmost caution that no doubtful carcases are allowed to leave this pqrt, |0 of the moat vital importance to the welfa? e.of thjs gvairja&.isi. dostry that the good name won b,y New Zealand meat should not be tarnished through any carelessness or negligence.
