Penny Postage.
"Post.] Mr Fish has struck a popular chord m his question relative to the establishment of a penny postage m this colony. People have long felt that there fe a palpable inconsistency m the imposition of the sam'3 charge for conveying a letter to Kaiwarra or Karori as to Queensland or Western Australia, or any other remote colony of the Austra* lasian group. The time has come when a penny, stamp ought to carry a letter to any part of these islands. Of course, the Department will raise the usual warning cry of loss of. revenue, but that is a mere bugbear, like the obstacles supposed to exist m the way of using j one sort of stamps for all purposes. There may be a trifling loss at first on that one class of revenue, and it is quite clear that the loss, like the postage, will have to come out of the public pocket. The public has to pay, whether m postages or m taxation, to make up the loss incurred m reduction of rates, so that point is not very material. But that there would be an enormous gain m the general conrenu ence by adopting a uniform penny postage m New Zealand nobody can pretend to doubt. We think th*t the public may reasonably ask the Postmaster»General to agree to this concession, which he may re'y upon it would be exceedingly popular and acceptable. '
