ANNEXATION QUESTION.

The Union Bank of Australia has declared a dividend of 9 per cent, for the past half year, and carried £80,000 to the reserve. The National Bank of New Zealand has deolared a dividend of 4 per cent for the past half year. Tho Orient steamship Lusitania, from Melbourne (May 30), arrived at Plymonth yesterday with a cargo of frozen meat on board. The French Consul at Zanzibar has proceeded to Madagascar. The shipment of frozen meat by the iiUßitania has arrived m good condition. Tenders for the Goldsborougb (Queensland^ loan of £200,0u0 were opened yesterday. The amount was uncovered, and the time has been extended. The Porte disputes the existence of the alleged de Lesseps monopoly, arguing j that it is limited to the present canal. Two hundred deaths have occurred at Cairo from cholera. A cordon has been placed round Alexandria with a vi . i w to exclude refugees from infected places. The telegraph operators m America are out on strike, and Berious inconvenience is being felt. Mr Leonard H. Courtney, M.P., one of the Assistant {Secretaries to' the Treasury has stated m the House of Commons .that the next Reform Bill will extend the franchise to women. Sir Arthur Gordon is writing a book on the habits of the Fijians. French bankers are offering Baron de Lesseps the necessary capital to cons' tract the second canal across the Isthmus of Suez. Mr Ashley added that the Government still consider £he proposal premature.
